Shopify SEO Checklist: 12 Fixes That Actually Move Rankings
Skip the fluff. These are the on-page and technical SEO fixes that consistently move Shopify stores up in Google.
Shopify handles a lot of SEO for you — clean URLs, SSL, mobile-friendly themes. But the defaults leave rankings on the table. Here are the twelve fixes we apply to every store we build or audit, ordered by impact.
High impact
- Write unique title tags and meta descriptions for every product and collection — never leave Shopify's auto-generated defaults
- Keyword-map your collections: each collection page should target one commercial keyword cluster (e.g. 'plus size summer dresses')
- Fix thin product descriptions — 150+ words of unique, benefit-led copy per product beats copy-pasted supplier text every time
- Compress images and serve WebP — page speed is a ranking factor and a conversion factor
Medium impact
- Add descriptive alt text to product images (helps Google Images traffic, which converts well for visual products)
- Enable product structured data so prices, availability and reviews show in search results
- Interlink related products and collections — internal links distribute authority and keep visitors browsing
- Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and check coverage monthly
Ongoing
- Publish buying guides and how-to content targeting informational keywords in your niche
- Fix broken links and redirect discontinued products to the closest alternative
- Earn reviews — review velocity and ratings influence both click-through and conversion
- Prune or noindex thin tag pages that duplicate collection content
SEO compounds. Stores that apply these fixes consistently typically see organic traffic grow month over month within 60–90 days. Run your store through our free analyzer to see which of these you're missing.
